CBD and THC are the two primary compounds in medical cannabis, each with very different effects. Understanding how they work — and how they are prescribed together — is key to finding the right treatment for your condition.
Two compounds, two very different roles
When most people hear "medical cannabis," they think of a single substance. In reality, the treatment is built around two distinct compounds — CBD and THC — that behave differently in the body and serve different therapeutic purposes. Understanding the difference is not just useful — it is essential to knowing what your prescription actually does and why.
What CBD and THC each do
CBD (cannabidiol) is non-psychoactive. It does not produce a high and is commonly associated with calming, anti-inflammatory, and anxiety-reducing effects. It is frequently used in treatment plans for anxiety, inflammation, and general symptom management.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is psychoactive and, in higher doses, can produce intoxicating effects. In medical use, however, it is prescribed in controlled doses where the goal is therapeutic benefit — not intoxication. THC is commonly used for chronic pain, sleep disorders, and neurological conditions.
Importantly, patients are not simply prescribed one or the other. Doctors prescribe specific formulations that balance both compounds based on the condition being treated, the patient's response, and the desired outcome. For example: higher CBD ratios for anxiety, a balanced CBD/THC ratio for chronic pain, and controlled THC levels for sleep or neurological issues.
Tailored, not generic
Medical cannabis is not one-size-fits-all. The formulation you receive is the result of a clinical decision — not a product choice. Every prescription is monitored and adjusted over time based on how your body responds. That precision is what separates medical cannabis treatment from anything available without a prescription.
